Day 36 | Oil and Water

This was a fun one to do so I thought I'll share how I did it for whoever wants to try do it too.

What you need:

  • Glass Bowl
  • Water
  • Cooking Oil
  • Tripod
  • Macro lens on manual focus
  • Speedlight / table lamp
  • Coloured paper or any colourful flat surface
  • Two items to raise the bowl
How to do it:

  1. Place your coloured paper/magazine/ anything with colors on a flat surface.
  2. Using two items (I use my salt and pepper shakers), raise the bowl about 100mm above the coloured paper/ surface.
  3. Set up your camera on a tripod.
  4. My settings (but feel free to experiment yourself): Macro lens on manual mode, f/5 , 1/60 / ISO 100.
  5. Use your table lamp or speedlight to light the paper below the bowl.
  6. Get someone (thank you Christiaan!) to slowly drop in a tiny bit of oil, really slowly. Once the oil has settled, manually focus and start snapping!

Sharing is caring. Please comment.

  1. Fun! I like your creativity with photographing water and such. The oil looks like large bubbles! Another thing I'm going to have to try.... :)
